What is it?

The MoCA-Basic is a version of the MoCA designed for individuals with low education levels or limited literacy. Education-dependent and literacy-reliant tasks have been replaced with suitable alternatives, while preserving the assessment of all major cognitive domains.

Purpose: It is designed to screen for mild cognitive impairment in individuals with limited literacy or educational background, ensuring that test results reflect cognitive abilities rather than educational factors, with the original validation study conducted in participants who had fewer than five years of formal education.

Administration time

Approximately 15 minutes.

Setting

The MoCA-Basic should be administered in a clinical setting or other calm, controlled, distraction-free environment.

Form

Paper-based; the examiner presents standardized stimuli and records the examinee’s responses directly on the test sheet.

Cost

Freely available for clinical and educational use; a license is required for commercial use.
